Coca-Cola 2024 Holiday Ad: Modern Nostalgia or AI Overreach?

🎵 “Holidays are coming…” 🎵 If you’ve been around a TV this holiday season, that tune is probably stuck in your head like me. Coca-Cola’s holiday ads have been a staple of festive marketing for decades, and this year is no exception. But what sets the 2024 holiday ad apart is its innovative twist—it’s AI-generated.

When I first watched it, I was intrigued. A quick dive into the backstory revealed this year’s ad is an AI recreation of their beloved 1995 holiday spot. While some see it as a nod to nostalgia, others find it unsettling, even calling it “soulless” and “dystopian.” Personally, I disagree. See for yourself.

A Marketing Giant Knows Its Audience

I’ve had the privilege of working with Coca-Cola in the past, specifically on their 125th-anniversary campaign. If there’s one thing I learned, it’s that Coca-Cola is as much a marketing company as it is a soft drink company. They know their audience better than almost any brand I’ve encountered, and they have mountains of research to back up their strategies.

This year’s ad stays true to their formula—family, togetherness and that holiday magic. The AI-generated visuals are strong, the festive spirit is palpable and the brand’s essence shines through.

The Role of AI in Marketing

Yes, the ad raises broader questions about the role of AI in marketing. Will AI replace human creativity? Could it erode authenticity? These are valid concerns. But as someone who works in communications and marketing—and regularly uses AI tools—I know that even AI-generated content relies heavily on human input. It’s not about letting a machine run wild; it’s about leveraging AI as a tool to execute a thoughtful, well-planned vision. And let’s be real—if you’re not already dabbling in AI, I’m calling your bluff. Don’t be a hypocrite. 😉

For Coca-Cola, this ad isn’t just a creative experiment—it’s a strategic play. They’re pushing the boundaries of what’s possible while staying true to their brand’s essence.

Verdict: Landing (New to the blog? My tomatometer is explained here.)

Coca-Cola’s 2024 holiday ad is Landing—like Santa’s sleigh touching down a billion times over on Christmas Eve. It’s thoughtful, magical and delivers exactly what it promises: warm fuzzies, nostalgia and holiday cheer.

AI may have powered the production, but the ad is firmly grounded in human strategy and insight. Like Santa’s team of reindeer guided by a masterful sleigh driver, Coca-Cola has embraced AI to enhance, not replace, the magic of their holiday storytelling.

It’s festive, it’s effective and it’s a great way to close out the year. What do you think? Let me know in the comments—and happy holidays!
